is the Vice Chairman and Chief Legal Officer for KPMG LLP, and a former chief federal judge for the Northern District of Oklahoma.
Throughout his wide-ranging legal career, Judge Holmes has epitomized the values of Equal Justice Works. He has long believed that we all must strive for goals that serve the common good and pursue ideals bigger than ourselves.
As a federal judge, he presided over some of the district’s highest profile cases involving gender and racial discrimination in government, schools and the private sector. Throughout his tenure on the bench, he was committed to the principle of equal access to justice.
He has mentored a generation of equally committed lawyers— who clerked for him in Oklahoma, as well as those who have worked with him throughout his legal career.
Judge Holmes has received a number of awards including: Ethisphere’s 100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics, National Law Journal’s America’s 50 Outstanding General Counsel, and Accounting Today’s Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting.
Judge Holmes stepped down from the federal bench in 2005 to join KPMG. In his current role, he oversees the firm’s risk management functions as well as its Office of General Counsel, Office of Government Affairs, firmwide security and the ethics and compliance program.
Prior to being appointed to bench by President Bill Clinton, Judge Holmes was a partner with the Washington, D.C. law firm of Williams & Connolly LLP.
Judge Holmes also served in a number of positions in law and government, including: Adjunct Professor of Constitutional Law, University of Tulsa College of Law; General Counsel and Staff Director, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence; Select Committee on Secret Military Assistance to Iran and the Nicaraguan Opposition (Iran-Contra Investigation); and Administrative Assistant, Oklahoma Governor David L. Boren.
He is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the state’s public honors college; Chairman of the Council for Court Excellence in Washington, D.C.; and a member of the Board of Trustees for Ford’s Theatre.
Judge Holmes received an A.B. from Harvard University, a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and an LLM in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center. He is married to Lois Romano, and has two daughters, Kristen and Jenna.
